Red Dead-Like PC MMO Enters Early Access Today

Wild West Online, the PC MMO that bears some resemblance to Rockstar’s Red Dead Redemption, has been available in a limited test for the past couple months. Today, its reach expands with the launch of the Early Access version that everyone can buy.

The Early Access version of Wild West Online includes a limited selection of what will be in the full release. Some of the content includes server-wide public PvP events, along with quests and missions to take on. The progression system is also in the Early Access version, meaning you can unlock new abilities and get better gear as you play. Some amount of character customization is also featured, while you can also personalize your horse.

Even more content will be added to Wild West Online over time as it approaches its full release later this year, including new public events and more. You can get into Wild West Online today by picking up the Townie ($35), Collector ($94), or Pioneer ($59) bundles through the game’s website.

Based on your decisions and actions, you become a law-enforcer, outlaw, or pioneer in the Western Frontier. The game incorporates PvP combat and PvE game missions with world exploration, resource gathering, and treasure hunts.

Wild West Online was originally bound for Kickstarter and Steam Early Access, but secured enough funding from private investors to skip that step and go right into development. The target for its full launch is this December. The game is being developed by a new studio, 612 Games, whose staff worked on games like Crysis and League of Legends.

Justice League Movie Review Scores Roundup: What Are The Critics Saying?

With one day until release of Justice League, the reviews are in. While Rotten Tomatoes is delaying the release of their score for the movie, that hasn’t slowed critics down from speaking their minds. As it turns out, opinions on the movie are actually rather divided.

With a score of 51 on GameSpot sister Metacritic score of 51 thus far, Justice League is already doing better than both Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (41) and Suicide Squad (40). However, it falls below the scores awarded to both Man of Steel (55) and Wonder Woman (76).

What does that means for the movie? It depends on what you’re looking for in the movie, really. The Justice League review from GameSpot’s own Mike Rougeau says it’s “a pretty good movie.” He continues, “Justice League is everything you want in a modern super team-up movie: a diverse crew of well-developed heroes coming together, butting heads, cracking jokes, and kicking butt. Despite the DCEU’s sputtering start, Justice League coalesces in the end, and it works in many more ways than not.”

Den of Geek’s Don Kaye agrees, writing, “The best aspect of Justice League is the team itself. For the most part, they are all engaging and charismatic, with the story giving each one of them a surprising amount of character moments and even little mini-arcs that they must resolve to serve the greater narrative.”

Truly, one of the throughlines of most reviews how good the heroes themselves are. Given that this is the first time The Flash (Ezra Miller), Cyborg (Ray Fisher) or Aquaman (Jason Momoa) get substantial screen time, it’s important to note that even the negative reviews typically speak positively about how the superheroes–new and old–were handled.

“Each character gets moments to shine and make a positive lasting impression,” IGN’s Jim Vejvoda says. “Thankfully, these three new characters work more often than not.”

Still, one place the movie seems to falter–and most critics agree–is the plot. “Steppenwolf is coming to get the Mother Boxes, which will destroy the world, so five superheroes team up and try to stop Steppenwolf,” Collider’s Matt Goldberg says, breaking down the movie’s story. “The plot can’t do much more heavy lifting than that, and it takes all of the movie’s effort just to hold together what feels like a forgotten Justice League of America story where an intergalactic invader comes to ruin everyone’s day.”

While something as major as the Justice League coming together should feel like a major moment, it instead ends up being, as Rougeau puts it, “Superhero Movie Plot 101.” At the very least, though, it’s more coherent than Batman v Superman. “You can follow the plot from A to B to C and the one-dimensional character motivations make sense,” Goldberg says.

Another place the movie falters in its reliance on CGI, which includes the movie’s villain Steppenwolf. “Steppenwolf is one of those patently phony CGI creations that gives the film a uncanny-valley shlockiness,” Entertainment Weekly’s Chris Nashawaty explains. “He looks like a cross between a Viking and a billy goat.”

With such divided opinions about Justice League, surely the movie will find its audience. Regardless of what critics thing though, there’s no reason to suspect the movie will do anything but win huge at the box office. After all, with fairly dismal reviews, both Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad went on to make Warner Bros. a lot of money.

Justice League is in theaters on November 17.

Star Wars Battlefront 2 Won’t Favor Players Who Purchase Loot Boxes, Dev Says

There’s been a lot of controversy surrounding Star Wars Battlefront II’s microtransactions, in particular its loot boxes, which are the only way for players to earn Star Cards and other items necessary for progression. This has raised concerns that the game would, effectively, be pay-to-win, as players who opt to purchase the loot boxes with real money would have an unfair advantage over those who grind to unlock them within the game.

During an AMA today on Reddit, developer DICE assured fans that its matchmaking system would keep Battlefront II from being unfairly skewed toward players who buy loot boxes. “We take into account not only your gameplay skills, but also inventory and time played, when we match players together in multiplayer,” said associate design director Dennis Brannvall. “You should not ever be matchmade together with players who are much better than you are. Ultimately your effectiveness is going to come down to skill, not the Star Cards that you have.”

Brannavall also assured that DICE would be constantly monitoring the game and tweaking it in order to maintain a level playing field. “If it doesn’t feel that way, we’ll see it on our side, too,” he said. “Our data will tell that story and we’ll make adjustments. We’re looking at results from millions of matches and will be continuously rebalancing items, unlocks, and matchmaking to create a fair, fun experience for all of our players. Beyond that, all Star Cards have maximum values regardless of how they are unlocked.”

Battlefront II’s handling of microtransactions has generated a lot of backlash from fans, particularly regarding estimates of how long it would take players who don’t purchase them to unlock major Star Wars characters like Darth Vader. DICE disputed those estimates during today’s AMA and addressed the controversial Credit cap implemented for Arcade and offline play.

Star Wars Battlefront II officially releases for PS4, Xbox One, and PC this week, on November 17, but players who purchased the game’s Deluxe edition or are EA/Origin Access members can already play it. You can read more about the game in our Star Wars Battlefront II review-in-progress.
