New Pokemon Go Update Out Now, Here’s What It Does (Not Much)
Niantic has rolled out a new update for Pokemon Go. The patch, version 1.59.1 for iOS and 0.89.1 for Android, is a fairly minor one and doesn’t introduce any major new features to the mobile game, but it does make a number of quality-of-life improvements.
Along with an assortment of unspecified bug fixes, the new update adds the ability to sort the Pokedex by region. Niantic has also improved incubator sorting and “the way Pokemon scale throughout the map.” Finally, the update resolves an issue that caused the Pokemon selection screen to scroll back to the top after you evolved or transferred a Pokemon.
You can read the full patch notes for the latest Pokemon Go update, courtesy of the game’s official website, below. This will likely be one of the final updates certain iPhone users will be able to install, as Niantic has announced it will soon end support for some older iOS devices. Beginning February 28, Pokemon Go will no longer be compatible with iPhones and iPads that can’t be updated to iOS 11, such as iPhone 5 and iPhone 5c.
Niantic recently announced a new, monthly event for Pokemon Go called Community Days. The inaugural Community Day takes place this Saturday, January 20, and unlike the Pokemon Go Fest and Safari Zone events, it’s available to players around the world. Each Community Day will feature a special Pokemon that knows a move it isn’t typically capable of learning; during Saturday’s event, players will have a chance to catch a Pikachu that can use Surf.
A new Legendary Pokemon is also now available in Pokemon Go. From now until February 14, players can encounter Kyogre in Raid Battles at Gyms. Similarly, The Pokemon Company announced a year-long series of distributions for Pokemon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon called the Year of Legendary Pokemon. Each month, players will be able to receive a free Legendary in the 3DS games.
Pokemon Go iOS Version 1.59.1 / Android Version 0.89.1 Patch Notes
- Resolved a bug that caused the Pokémon collection screen to scroll to the top after evolving, transferring, or renaming a Pokémon.
- Added the ability to sort the Pokédex by region.
- Improved incubator sorting order when selecting an incubator.
- Improved the way Pokémon scale throughout the app.
- Various bug fixes and performance updates.

You’ll Be Able To Turn Off The iPhone’s Battery-Saving Feature That Slows Your Phone Down
Apple found itself facing some unwanted attention last year when it was revealed the company throttles performance of older iPhones to compensate for battery degradation. Although it has a reason for this setup, the secrecy surrounding it–knowledge of it only became public after a third-party group’s report–understandably caused a great deal of consternation among consumers. Soon, however, the so-called feature will become an option you can toggle off.
The system in question was implemented as part of iOS 10.2.1 in 2016 and affects the iPhone 6, 6s, SE, and, more recently, 7. Essentially, it slows the speed of iPhones as their batteries age. This is because performance spikes can require more power than an old battery is capable of providing, which can result in a phone shutting down completely. Apple’s solution to avoid this issue is to slow the phone down.
Apple acknowledged the initial report of performance-throttling and apologized. CEO Tim Cook has now addressed the subject in an interview with ABC News, denying that the feature was completely hidden but admitting it could have done more to inform users about what was going on. “When we did put it [the software update] out, we did say what it was, but I don’t think a lot of people were paying attention,” he said. He later added, “Maybe we should have been clearer, as well.”

More importantly, Cook revealed that, following a future update, the feature can be disabled. Although he wouldn’t suggest users do so, he said, “If you don’t want it, you can turn it off.”
There’s no word on when this option will be added. In the meantime, users can take advantage of a discounted battery replacement, which will help to circumvent the need for performance-throttling. For 2018, Apple has dropped the price of battery replacements to $29, down from $79.

Big Final Fantasy 14 Update Coming This Month, Adds A Giant Death Claw Mount And More
Following the Starlight Celebration and Heavensturn holiday events, a big new update is on the way for Final Fantasy XIV. Square Enix detailed the upcoming 4.2 patch on the game’s official website, and it’s set to introduce new dungeons, scenarios, mounts, and more to the MMO later this month.
The centerpiece of update 4.2 is a new story scenario titled Rise of a New Sun, which takes players back to the nation of Doma. Here’s how Square Enix describes the scenario: “Thanks to the Warrior of Light’s heroic deeds and Raubahn’s long-awaited return, Ala Mhigo continues its steady march towards recovery. Yet there is no rest for the Scions of the Seventh Dawn, for the winds of trouble are blowing from the Far East, where an unexpected spark threatens to set the kindling of chaos ablaze. Can Doma survive the brewing firestorm to welcome the light of the new day?”

The update also introduces a new side quest called The Jade Stoa, as well as two new dungeons: Hells’ Lid and a Hard version of The Fractal Continuum. The former is a volcanic island that’s home to a variety of oni, while the latter is an ancient museum that houses “both technological marvels and chimerical horrors.”
In addition, update 4.2 adds a PvP map called the Crystal Tower Training Grounds, as well as a new team system that allows you to band together with up to five other players and compete against other teams in ranked matches. Square Enix is also adjusting the rules for PvP battles, shortening their duration and adding a new Light Medal effect that reduces the damage you take as the number of medals you’re holding drops.

Other notable new features coming in update 4.2 are several new mounts, such as a griffin, an auspicious kamuy, or the unsettling magitek death claw, which you can see in the screenshot above. Players will also be able to build a submersible in their company workshop and hunt for treasures in the ocean, while bards’ Performance action has been revamped with a new interface and more piano, lute, and fiddle tones.
Square Enix hasn’t announced a release date for Final Fantasy XIV’s 4.2 update, but it’s slated to arrive “late” this month. In the meantime, you can read the full patch notes for the forthcoming update on the official Final Fantasy XIV website.

Call Of Duty WW2’s Patch Notes Detailed, Buffs Sawed-Off Shotgun
Call of Duty: WWII developer Sledgehammer Games has delivered a new update to the game, making adjustments to several weapons. The changes take place immediately on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
A lot of the changes are slight, but the sawed-off shotgun has received a big buff after some players felt it was considerably underpowered. There are also two tweaks to the maps in the game. Check out the full patch notes below.
Weapons Changes
- FG 42 – Recoil buff and slight fire rate buff
- Grease Gun – Recoil adjustment to give player more control, ADS transition time buff
- Kar98k – ADS transition time nerf
- Lee Enfield – ADS transition time buff
- Combat Shotgun – Slight Max Damage range nerf, still overall buff to where it was at launch of game
- Sawed-Off Shotgun – Max and Mid Damage range buff, buff to number of pellets to kill, reload time buff, and hip spread nerf
Maps Changes
- Moved defensive start spawns in S&D on Sainte Marie du Mont
- Moved CTF flag positions back on London Docks
The changes come just before Call of Duty: WWII gets its first major DLC expansion, Resistance, on January 30 on PS4. Among new new multiplayer maps, the expansion adds a new Nazi Zombies chapter called The Darkest Shore (check it out in the video above).
The Darkest Shore takes place on a “secluded” island just days after the events of the previous Nazi Zombies chapter. The chapter introduces new zombies to hunt, which Activision says will be “more cunning, quick, and even more bloodthirsty than before.” It also adds a fog environmental effect, which will make it much more difficult to spot approaching enemies.
The Resistance will also introduce a new War Mode mission called Operation Intercept, which tasks players with rescuing French resistance fighters and escaping safely. Like other Call of Duty games, the expansion has a timed exclusivity period on PlayStation 4. Xbox One and PC versions will follow a month later.

Epic Slows Paragon Development to Increase Fortnite Focus
In the wake of Fortnite’s incredible success, Epic Games has moved some members from the Paragon team over to work on its popular sandbox survival game.
In a post on Reddit, Epic addressed the future of Paragon, explaining that while support for the title will continue, the studio is scaling back its focus on the free-to-play MOBA in favor of increasing its focus on Fortnite.
“Progress has been slower lately for two reasons: First, the team’s time is split between immediate improvements and longer-term efforts, so there’s less visible progress,” the studio explained. “Second, a number of Paragon team members jumped onto Fortnite to help sustain the game as it has grown far larger than anything in Epic’s past.”
