Star Wars Battlefront 2 Launch: Release Date, Review, Gameplay Videos, And Everything You Need To Know

Star Wars Battlefront II is the latest Star Wars game from EA and DICE, and this time around, the developers have made some major changes to the series. Unlike 2015’s Star Wars Battlefront, all of Battlefront II’s DLC characters and maps will be given away for free to all players, but the game introduces microtransactions in the form of loot crates to compensate for that. It also features a full single-player campaign that’s set between the events of Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens and puts players in the role of Iden Versio, the leader of an Imperial special forces group called the Inferno Squad.

Star Wars Battlefront II releases for PS4, Xbox One, and PC on November 17. Ahead of the game’s launch, we’ve compiled our most important features and gameplay videos detailing everything you need to know about Star Wars Battlefront II. Check back often as we update this article with our in-depth review, guides, additional articles, and videos.

Review In Progress

Our full review of Battlefront II is coming soon once we get more time with the live game. Until then, you can read our thoughts in our Star Wars Battlefront II review-in-progress. GameSpot critic Alessandro Fillari scored the game a 6/10 and wrote, “While its main narrative feels unresolved, and the general loop of the multiplayer carries a number of issues, Battlefront II still manages to evoke that same sense of joy and excitement found in the core of what the series is all about. But as it stands, the biggest hurdle that Battlefront II will need to overcome–for its simultaneous attempts to balance microtransactions with genuine feeling of accomplishments–is deciding on what type of game it wants to be.”

Battlefront 2 Has A Daily Credit Cap For Arcade Mode, It Seems

It has been discovered that Star Wars: Battlefront II‘s Arcade mode has a daily credit cap, which could be yet another element of the game that fans aren’t happy about. This cap was discovered weeks ago, but recently gathered more attention after Game Informer‘s Andrew Reiner tweeted about it.

The credit cap may be annoying to players since it essentially means you can’t grind through to get credits, if you wanted to do that. With the cap in place, the game seemingly pushes you toward spending real money to buy loot boxes.

Earlier today, Battlefront developer DICE released a statement saying that it is constantly looking over feedback and will change the game as it sees fit in the future. It could be that this cap is removed or altered down the road, though that remains to be seen.

Battlefront II doesn’t officially release until November 17. The game is playable on Xbox One and PC right now through EA/Origin Access, and players are also raising their concerns about how the game can feel pay-to-win because loot boxes with game-changing items can be purchased with real money.

Another part of Battlefront II generating buzz and controversy is the credit values to unlock heroes. Some remarked that they were too high, and in response, DICE just today announced that the credit-unlock values for characters like Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker are dropping by 75 percent. EA’s original statement on the matter did not go over well on Reddit, where it was downvoted more than 500,000 times.

The EA/Origin Access trial provides the full multiplayer component and the first three single-player missions, though you’re limited to a total of 10 hours of gameplay. Pre-ordering the Deluxe edition gets you complete access on November 14, including on PlayStation 4. You can read more in our Battlefront II review in progress.

Snapchat Might Be Getting Into Gaming, Report Says

It’s been tough sledding for social media company Snap, which operates the messaging service Snapchat, with its share price falling since the IPO back in March. One way the company might improve its fortunes is … video games? That’s the word from Reuters, which reports that Snap investor Tencent believes video games and ad sales could help improve Snap’s bottom line, though specifics on this are unclear at this point.

Recently, Snap announced that Tencent bought 145.8 million of its shares on the open market. This in turn led some to wonder how Tencent, which is one of China’s biggest internet companies and has many video game investments, might collaborate.

In a statement to Reuters, Tencent said, “The investment enables Tencent to explore cooperation opportunities with the company on mobile games publishing and newsfeed as well as to share its financial returns from the growth of its businesses and monetization in the future.”

Snap declined to comment when approached by Reuters. But in an official filing, Snap said it is eager to share “ideas and experiences” with Tencent, which invested in the social media company for the first time in 2013. It added, “We have long been inspired by the creativity and entrepreneurial spirit of Tencent and we are grateful to continue our longstanding and productive relationship that began over four years ago.”

Tencent owns League of Legends developer Riot Games and Clash of Clans studio Supercell; Tencent also owns a big chunk of Gears of War creator Epic Games.

We’ll report back with more details on what Tencent’s investment in Snap might mean for gaming as new information comes to light.

Xbox One X And PS4 Pro Won’t Run AC Origins In Native 4K, But Enhancements Still Look Great

With the Xbox One X and PlayStation 4 Pro out now, the continual analysis of how multiplatform games run on both suped-up systems is in full swing. Digital Foundry, a division of Eurogamer known for its tech analysis, took an in-depth look at Assassin’s Creed Origins recently and compared the performance and visual quality of the game on both platforms.

First thing to note is that the game uses dynamic resolution scaling; the render resolution will adjust itself in real time based on how graphically demanding the game gets to maintain a consistent framerate. To alleviate the loss in quality, Origins uses temporal anti-aliasing that reduces jaggies while making the overall image look softer.

According to Digital Foundry, the Xbox One X was able to hit a maximum resolution of 3584×2016, which is very close to true 4K (3840×2160). However, during the most common gameplay situations, the resolution settled between 1700p and 1800p. On the PS4 Pro, the highest resolution recorded was 1584p (2816×1584), but was consistently running 1440p (2560×1440). As far as resolution minimums, the Xbox One X didn’t dip any lower than 1656p and the PS4 Pro didn’t go below 1350p.

Aside from resolution, the two versions of the game share similar quality when it comes to visual effects; draw distances and general level of detail were said to be the same. On both the Xbox One X and PS4 Pro, framerate was said to be much more consistent than the consoles’ standard counterparts. Author David Bierton stated, “Frame-rates that regularly dip under 30fps on the older kit resolve much closer to the target performance level on PS4 Pro and Xbox One X.”

The PC version is capable of 60 FPS, native 4k (2160p), and can push shadow detail further than either of the upgraded consoles, but would require a high-end machine. It’s unclear what PC specs and settings would produce this level of experience, though. Bierton concluded that the standard PS4 “can feel overtaxed at times,” which is a problem exacerbated on the Xbox One. While the PC is capable of offering the best version, the extra pixel count puts the Xbox One X version ahead of the PS4 Pro.

If you want more detail and the full report, including how high dynamic range (HDR) works in the game, you can read that on Digital Foundry or watch their video below. Be sure to read our Assassin’s Creed Origins review or use our guides and walkthroughs if you’re already playing the game.
