The Nutcracker and the Four Realms Review
Ever since the massive success of Pirates of The Caribbean Disney has been attempting to catch that same live-action lightning in a bottle. Though they’ve had numerous record-breaking smashes within the MCU, Star Wars and by raiding their own animated IP for remakes, they’ve found it hard to recreate the model of a new original franchise with both Tomorrowland and The Lone Ranger failing to grab the attentions of audiences. The newest original Disney live-action film is the veritable Holiday smorgasbord The Nutcracker and the Four Realms, which whilst by no means a great movie has definitely learnt some lessons from the studio’s mistakes of the past.
Loosely inspired by the classic ballet The Nutcracker, this reimagining sits somewhere between The Chronicles of Narnia, Alice in Wonderland, and… Return to Oz–we’ll come back to that later—with a young feisty girl who doesn’t quite fit in with her fancy family and longs for something more. In that way, MacKenzie Foy’s Clara is just like so many other Disney leading ladies; Belle’s tired of her provincial town, Ariel’s desperate to explore the human world, and (live action) Alice is ready to follow her father’s footsteps and explore the globe. Clara’s motivations though come from the loss of her mother.
Old Man Logan #50 Serves as a Fitting Series Finale
Apparently you can’t bring back one Wolverine without discarding another. Old Man Logan made his transition to the core Marvel Universe in the aftermath of the regular Wolverine’s death. And now that Wolverine is in the excruciatingly slow process of returning, it’s Old Man Logan’s turn to shuffle off into that good night. Old Man Logan #50 proves to be a fitting, if rushed, series finale.
It’s fitting that writer Ed Brisson wraps up the series with another fight between Logan and Maestro. It mirrors both the beginning of Brisson’s run and the very first Wolverine story. The tone of this rematch is certainly dire enough, with Logan clinging to life while his healing factor fails him and “King” Maestro lording it over a remote town full of terrified subjects. Had Marvel not announced the upcoming Dead Man Logan followup series, there would be legitimate cause to worry about whether our hero can survive this fight.

The Best Celebrity Halloween Costumes of 2018
Halloween is upon us! What better way to celebrate than by dressing up as your favorite fictional characters? Well, these celebrities thought so too, because some have decked themselves out for the occasion.
Repping comic book characters, there’s Stephen Merchant as Doctor Strange, Jensen Ackles as Red Hood, Sarah Michelle Gellar as Harely Quinn, Emma Watson as Wonder Woman, Halsey as Poison Ivy and Anthony Anderson, Tracee Ellis Ross and Marcus Scribner as T’Challa/Black Panther, Nakia and Killmonger (respectively) for a special Halloween episode of Black-ish. Oh, and the Timberlake family also went all out on LEGO Batman costumes.
Opinion: Netflix’s Hilda and the Importance of Escapism
In the days before Netflix or Hulu – an age where cable TV was hard to come by – my passion was the outdoors. My family didn’t have the money to invest in television, and the internet was hardly accessible, so I spent most of my time as a young child going outside. Of course, my parents were strict on that too – I could only play in my backyard, or near the school playgrounds.
This never stopped me from having fun though. To an adult, a backyard could be something as plain as a large area of grass and shrubs, but for 8-year-old me, it was the foundation for my imagination. Some days it was a haunted area for spooky ghosts, and other days, it was a city, filled with mesmerizing citizens of all shapes and sizes. The world was my oyster – a great escape from reality.
South Park’s New Halloween Episode Has Great Payoff
Warning: Full spoilers for the episode below.
Even though South Park sticks to that September-November timeframe nowadays, it’s only occasionally that the series goes through the trouble of crafting a full-blown Halloween episode. Sometimes the result is an instant classic (2012’s “A Nightmare on Facetime” comes to mind) and other times you wind up with “Goth Kids 3: Dawn of the Posers.” This year’s Halloween special leans more towards the former, luckily. It’s just too bad that slow build-up limited what was possible with “The Scoots.”
With all the current fads just begging to be spoofed by South Park, I’m not sure the e-scooter was anywhere near the top of the list, but that’s the direction the series went this week. The town’s e-scooter invasion made for some humorous moments early on (mostly involving Mr. Mackey’s growing rage at the scooters and the accident-prone hipsters who ride them) but it wasn’t long before the e-scooter gag became just one more dead horse for the writers to beat. I will grant, though, that the e-scooter humor might connect better with city dwellers who have to co-exist with them on a daily basis. I live in one of those parts of the South where public transportation barely exists, so your mileage may vary.
